So its been a great summer, feeling good. So my tiny pet care business Little Happy Hounds and indeed Little Happy Cats turned five years old this August. We have taken on three new dog walking clients, over two house holds, and three new cat sitting clients in the last few weeks all in New Mills, and I thats ironic as thats were the little happy hounds story begins, back in 2012, so I thought I would tell you all, assuming people read this about my story.
So at that point I had been living in New Mills since 2005, I am very much a Geordie, born and raised in Newcastles upon Tyne, I left Newcastle in 2001 and move to Manchester, let me tell you to be 21 years old and live in Manchester is great, I partied hard for quite a few years, working in hospitality. I met my partner discovered New Mills, and I officially moved here in 2005, leaving my city centre life behind me for the countryside.
So I first started thinking about being self-employed and being a dog walker in 2010 a friend planted the seed in my head, it took another two years several dead end jobs before I built up enough courage to try something new and go it alone, as it were. My last job was the pits, working for a very well known organisation, on a seasonal contract, no chance of promotion or anything like that, you were their for six months and that was it, working in their dodgy cafe. Prior to that had been a pub in Cheadle Hulme that I worked at twice left too work at well known department store xmas contract, and then went back to the pub, with rose coloured spectacles as in comparison to the department store the pub was a amazing, I was wrong on every account, made several disastrous decisions, please don’t think me stupid going from retail to pubs pulling pints, being a cashier, I have done a lot of there other things, I went back to college as mature student at 25 studied part time for a A-level equivalent course ( too old for a levels) in English and media, I excelled at college, then went on to do a three year degree course at MMU in film and media, I gained a 2:1, and I actually studied for five years !
Not all that time was wasted, yes I am not a production assistant at media city, however I gained lots of other skills, skills I use currently for my business, and most of all I realised I was not stupid something people had been telling me for a long time. So five years of study, 17 years in a largely forgettable, career in retail and hospitality brief stint at the COOP bank, failed the training and here we are five years of success with Little Happy Hounds.
